IBM has announced two separate projects that aim to track supply chains for the metals industry using the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain platform.
One is designed to track cobalt traveling from a mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo to a Ford Motor Company plant, while the other seeks to monitor the shipping of metals from a mine in Mexico.

At noon on the 25th of January 2019, the Corrego do Feijão iron ore deposit in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil, experienced a catastrophic tailings dam failure. The mud stream demolished houses, washed the roads away, and reached Vila Ferteko settlement, and the victims were sent to the hospital located nearby the local state capital of Belo Horizonte. As reported by Dow Jones with reference to the fire crews and rescuers, as at the morning of the 28th of January, the death of 58 people was confirmed, and 200 people are reported missing.

Indonesia battered by devastating quakes and tsunamis. Sitting on the geologically active Pacific 'Ring of Fire', the vast archipelago is frequently hit natural disasters. A tsunami has killed more than 370 people and injured hundreds on the shorelines of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, the latest disaster to hit the vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands and home to 260 million people. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency, said another tsunami was a possibility because of the continued volcanic eruptions of Anak Krakatau.

End of an era as Germany's last black coal mine closes. Germany will close its last black coal mine on Friday, turning the page on two centuries of mining history in the Ruhr region that helped fuel the country's post-war "economic miracle". Although the end of the Prosper-Haniel colliery near the western town of Bottrop comes as polluting coal is increasingly under scrutiny, it was cheaper hard coal from abroad, not environmental concerns, that sounded the mine's death knell.

One of the energy sources, which can replace the exhaustible resources of oil, natural gas, coal, uranium is right under our feet – the hot dry rock (HDR) is an abundant source of geothermal energy available for use. People learned how to mine it back in early 1960s, but further works on experimental petro-thermal stations are not moving.
Progress is hampered not only by the high cost of projects and technological difficulties, but also by negative public opinion.

Fires that contribute to deforestation spiked six-fold in Colombia in the year after an historic 2016 peace agreement ended decades of conflict between FARC guerrilla and government forces, according to a study in Nature Ecology & Evolution.
"This dramatic increase from trends in the last decade will boost the likelihood of deforestation in protected areas in the upcoming year," said study co-author Laura C. Schneider, an associate professor in the Department of Geography at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

The district court of the Slovakian town Prievizda issued a resolution to arrest 12 activists of Greenpeace international environmental organisation, who had been retained earlier during their anti-government protest in the territory of the coal shaft in Novaki town. On Wednesday 28 of November, the Greenpeace activists climbed up to the shaft headgear and spread a placade that had a slogan against coal mining in the territory of Slovakia.
